Honors Methods of Design Inquiry

Hi everyone!! I hope everyone had a restful spring break!

Over break and a little bit of this week I have been diving deeper into female architects in the post-war era. In class before break, we discussed how Natalie de Blois was acting as a foil to the other case studies, and it may be more powerful to research another designer. Additionally, I’m still struggling a bit to narrow down my question further. My proposed research question was: What contributed to modernism’s regression away from its original socially driven ideals toward luxury-oriented architecture? However, as I continue my research I’ve been thinking about switching directions towards asking ‘How did geopolitical context affect the evolution of modernism through female architects in the post war era?’ While this is a switch away from my initial research, I think its a step in the right direction towards a more unique subject which I find of equal interest to the original question. Additionally, I have begun reading Women Architects at Work: Making American Modernism by Mary Anne Hunting published by Princeton in 2025. I’m hoping this will aid me in my search for a new American case study or just provide some more context of female architects in the post-war era.

If anyone else has any ideas as how to better my research or any literature/sources to look into let me know in the comments!

Hi Lizzie! I think your question’s pivot is helpful in that it cuts out a step! Your original question, why did modernism go from socially-driven to luxury, is, to some extent, answered by “geopolitics.” So then you ask, how did geopolitics affect modernism? I think the war and global economics covers a lot of ground, but you really narrow things down by focusing on female architects. As I read your post, my own question is, in what way are you connecting women and geopolitics? Are you tracking the influences of women on modernism, and how those influences are influenced by geopolitics? I’m sure this will be clarified in our next phases haha, and I’m excited to see what you come up with!
